Memorial to Princess Nicolas Esterhazy and Lady Clementina Villiers
|
Artist: |
Baron Carlo Marochetti
|
The two young women commemorated in this memorial, both died young, in their early thirties. They were the daughters of George Child Villiers, 5th Earl of Jersey 1773-1859). The Earl was famous as a breeder of racehorses. One of the racing trophies which Marochetti modelled for the silversmith Hancock, depicted an episode from the history of the Earl's family. This was the Goodwood Race Plate of 1851, which consisted of a silver group representing The Death of Lord Francis Villiers (see catalogue entry), an incident which occured during the Civil War. It may be that the Earl sponsored this trophy.
The Earl of Jersey twice served as Lord Chamberlain of the Household and twice also as Master of the Horse. It may have been in his functions at court that Marochetti encountered him.
The two portrait reliefs are distinctly in the style of Marochetti, and another (damaged) marble version of the relief of Lady Clementina Villiers is in the collection of the sculptor's descendants. However, there is a stylistic discrepancy between the portraits and the angel in the lunette above them, who is considerably more soft and sugary in modelling. Other aspects of the memorial's design suggest that another hand was active in its creation.
