|
Artist: |
Baron Carlo Marochetti

A lengthy description of this racing trophy is provided by the Doncaster, Nottingham and Lincoln Gazette of 16 Sept. 1853. The subject is taken from the chroniclers Froissart and Walsingham. The French king, having been taken prisoner at the Battle of Poitiers, is being led as captive through the streets of London, to be received by the Lord Mayor, Henry Picard. With the exemplary chivalry for which he was famed, the Black Prince rode on a small black horse, unadorned and dressed in the suit of armour which he had worn in battle. The king of France, on the other hand, was mounted on a white courser covered with stately trappings, and himself clothed in the robes of state worn by monarchs. The idea had been suggested to Marochetti by Lord Ribblesdale, one of the stewards of the Doncaster races, whom the paper describes as "a nobleman whose good taste and zeal for the sports of the turf are well calculated to direct and point out what would be at once satisfactory and appropriate". The trophy had been manufactured in the Hancock workshop in London, but supplied through the local silversmith, Mr Woodmansey of Doncaster. In the opinion of this paper this was a trophy in which "the workmanship surpasses the material of the composition" and it was a demonstration of "the improvements in the good taste of the people of this country".
The trophy was illustrated in the Illustrated London News of 17 September 1853 (vol.XXIII,no.644, p.224) which commented on the admirable workmanship of Hancock and commended the group as "a fine specimen of working in metal".
Other descriptions of the piece are to be found in the Newcastle Courant (Sept. 23, 1853) and the North Wales Chronicle (Sept. 24, 1853)
