This medallion relief portrait of Macaulay is known in several casts. This one is at Wallington Hall, the home of the Trevelyan family. Sir Charles Trevelyan was married to Macaulay's sister, Hannah. The portrait was executed in the first year of Marochetti's residence in London, which was also the year in which Macaulay's magnum opus, The History of England from the Accession of James II, appeared in print. In the Christie, Manson and Woods sale of Marochetti's studio contents, held on 7 May 1868, amongst the bronzes, was "a profile in relief of Lord Macaulay in a carved frame (Lot 98). In the annotated copy of the sale catalogue held at the National Art Library, the name of Scharf is given as the purchaser. Sir George Scharf was the first curator of the National Portrait Gallery. The NPG's catalogue gives Marochetti's studio sale as the provenenace of their version of the relief. Lot 127 in the same sale was "Bas-relief profile of the late Lord Macaulay, in Minton's ware". No examples of this ceramic version of Marochetti's relief have been recorded in recent times, though at least one other Marochetti portrait relief in Parian Ware has been identified, the 1849 portrait of James Oswald M.P., which is in a French Private Collection. This does not bear a mark identifying it as being from the Minton firm. It should be remembered that the firm of Copeland also produced Statuary Porcelain versions of two Marochetti models around this time, so that the question of who manufactured this portrait roundel must remain a matter of speculation.
