The Goodwood Cup 1851, "The Death of Lord Francis Villiers"
|
Artist: |
Baron Carlo Marochetti
|
The Goodwood Cup of 1851 was shown in the Great Exhibition, and this photograph of a very challenging subject appeared in volume III of the Reports of the Juries of the Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations 1851, published in 1852 (p.1124).The Times of 26 July 1851 gives an account of the historical event depicted in this racing trophy. Marochetti had chosen for his subject"the death of Lord Francis Villiers, described in Aubrey's Antiquities of Surrey, Lord Clarendon, and other historians of the eventful times of Cromwell and his opponents. Lord Villiers, a young man of great personal beauty and high attainments, had, with others, got up a plot to proclaim Charles II, when he and his party were surprised by the Protector's soldiers under Colonel Rich at Kingston, in a lane leading from which place to Surbiton, the young nobleman was slain after a gallant defence". The paper proceeded to vaunt the artistic qualities of the trophy: "The outline of all the figures introduced is very masterly. The rugged veterans of the Parliamentary army contrasting well with the elegance and graceful bearing of the young cavalier. A dying horse in the foreground is particularly worthy of remark; the limbs are partly paralysed and animation is perceptibly departing. The manipulations of the manufacturer are elaborate, and the finish of the whole in the best manner".
This trophy was also illustrated in the Illustrated London News of 2 August 1851 (vol.XIX, no.506, p.149), which informed its readers that the group had been "executed in silver by Mr C. Hancock of 39 Bruton-street, from a model by Marochetti". Furthermore, the episode depicted, which it was pointed out related to the history of Lord Jersey's family, had been suggested by Mr Hancock to the artist. The 1851 cup winner was Nancy, which also won the Chester Cup and the Ebor Handicap. Nancy was owned and trained by a Squire Watt of Bishop Burton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
