Andrew Stephenson Dalglish (1793-1858) was the son of Robert Dalglish, the Lord Provost of Glasgow. and brother of Robert Dalglish MP. He was a calico printer and prominent Glasgow citizen. He and his brother had played a part in getting Marochetti's statue of the Duke of Wellington erected in the city in 1841. On 21 Nov. 1844, a banquet had been held in his honour, and to thank him for his work as Convenor of the Wellington Statue Committee. The Earl of Glasgow proposed a toast to him, including the words: "No man could possess more eminently those qualities necessary for bringing that task to an efficient termination". (The Sun, 27 Nov. 1844) Like the bust of Catherine Mathie Lamond and the portrait relief of the Glasgow politician, James Oswald, both dated 1849, this bust indicates the sculptor's determination, immediately after settling in Britain, to renew links with a city in which he had enjoyed earlier success. This bust was executed in marble by the Scottish sculptor John Mossman. We are told that Marochetti had sent his bust of Prince Albert, which was also executed around this time, to a Parisian carver, to be put into bronze, but on comparing the result with Mossman's job on the Dalglish bust, he decided to have Mossman do a repeat job on the Albert. (T.Gildard, "The late Mr John Mossman", Proceedings of the Philosophical Society of Glasgow, Vol.XXIII, 1891-92, p.294)
The bust was presented to Kelvingrove Art Gallery by Miss Janet A. Dalglish in 1935.
A miniature bronze version of the bust exists in a private collection in France.
