Description: |
This sculpture is a portrait of the artist's Balinese model Kassi. The original portrait was modelled in clay from life in Bali in 1937-38 and fired in a straw kiln in Bali. Fleischmann carried the sculpture with him when he fled Bali ahead of the Japanese invasion of Indonesia in 1942. He brought the sculpture with him when he travelled to Europe in 1948, and kept it in his collection in his London studio. In 1979 he supervised the casting of this sculpture into polyester resin in London in 1979 and mounted it on a glass mosaic background screen.
