Title:

Memorial to John de la Poer Beresford, Archbishop of Armagh
|
Artist: |
Baron Carlo Marochetti
|
This is a half-length version of the effigy of the Archbishop of Armagh, which Marochetti executed in 1867 for Armagh Cathedral (for a fuller account of the subject and that memorial, see the entry for the tomb).
This repetition of the Armagh effigy was commissioned, like the full length version, by Louisa Lady Waterford and her sister-in-law, Christiana, wife of the 4th Marquess of Waterford. We know this, because on 15 Jan. 1867, Lady Waterford wrote to a friend, referring principally to the tomb of her husband; "Did you see the monument in Clonegam Church? Also that of the primate, the joint gift of Lady Waterford and myself". She went on to say that Marochetti was "to make a marble tomb of poor Johnny", referring to John, 4th Marquess of Waterford, Christiana's husband.
