Baron Carlo Marochetti

Marochetti had signed a contract for the large and complex monument to Carlo Alberto of Savoy on 3 July 1856. The monument was unveiled in Turin on 21 July 1861. Between these two dates, the Second War of Independence had taken place in Northern Italy. In this war, French and Piedmontese troops had defeated the Austrians in major battles at Solferino and Magenta in June 1859. However an earlier indication that the allies had the upper hand was the Battle of Montebello on 20 May 1859. One of the Italian casualties in this battle was Colonel Tommaso Morelli, who had died of his wounds on the day after the battle. It is probable that Marochetti received the commission for the bust and relief panel on the monument to Morelli in the Cathedral of Casale Monferrato through his contacts in the Sardinian army concerned in the successful outcome of the Carlo Alberto monument. Correspondance from Marochetti relating to the Casale monument is from the Spring of 1860, and the monument was inaugurated on 20 May 1862, the third anniversary of the Battle of Montebello. The relief panel has the same rope-like frame as the reliefs on the pedestal of the Carlo Alberto monument. Morelli was not buried in the cathedral, but in the cemetery of Casale Monferrato. It is reported that, in recent years, the bust has been removed from the cathedral, possibly for safe-keeping, to the nearby Seminary buildings. |
