Camille, Baronne Marochetti

Baron Carlo Marochetti

In 1835
Marochetti married Camille de Maussion, the daughter of Adolphe de Maussion and
his wife Emilienne (née Thellusson). Camille's father had been Auditor to the
Council of State in the final days of the First Empire, and his fortunes do not
appear to have declined under the restored Bourbons. In 1816 he acquired the
Château de Jambville, not far from the Marochettis' home at Vaux-sur-Seine. As
a girl, in Paris, Camille had been the playmate of the two daughters of Lord
Stuart de Rothesay, the British Ambassador to France. Charlotte Stuart would
later marry Lord Canning, and her sister Louisa, a talented painter, would
become Marchioness of Waterford ( see Augustus J.C. Hare, Two Noble Lives,
London 1893, vol.I, p.152). Both were to prove useful contacts for Marochetti
after his move to England in 1848.
Four
children were born to the Marochetti couple: Giovanna (b.1836), Maurizio
(b.1837), Filiberto (b.1838), and Richard (b.1854). Giovanna died in 1852,
probably of tuberculosis, and Richard had a very short life indeed, dying at St
Leonards on Sea on 9 Oct. 1855 (Times 16 Oct. 1855). Some glimpses of
the home life of Baronne Marochetti, as she became, can be obtained from the
letters of Anne Thackeray Ritchie, daughter of the novelist W.M. Thackeray. The
Thackerays were close friends and
neighbours of the Marochettis in Onslow Square. (see Anne Thackeray
Ritchie, Journals and Letters, with biographical commentary and notes by
L.F. Shankman, ed. Abigail Burnham Bloom and John Maynard, Columbus, Ohio State
University Press, 1994) . A charming carte de visite portrait of Camille
Marochetti was taken by the photographer Camille Silvy (National Portrait
Gallery, London), showing her standing beside a grandfather clock, holding a
small dog in her arms.
Though it has been stated that this roundel
relief portrait is in marble, it is possible that it is in fact in Parian Ware
or Statuary Porcelain, as is another similar roundel portrait of James Oswald
MP (see entry), which has the same elaborate frame with egg and dart and
acanthus motif
