|
The Times of 29 July 1853 describes this racing trophy. "The cup, a handsome piece of plate designed and modelled by Baron Marochetti, represents an incident said to have taken place at the Battle of Cressy, where the King of Bohemia and two French knights devoted themselves to death by tying their bridles together and dashing into the thick of the English army". It went on to inform its readers that "this splendid memorial of French gallantry was appropriately borne away by Jouvence, a French horse". The trophy was illustrated in the Illustrated London News of 30 July 1853 (vol.XXIII, no.635, p.68), which pointed out that the King of Bohemia was shown wearing on his helmet the three feathers, which, along with the king's motto ich dien were adopted, after the king's death in the battle, by the Black Prince, and which became thereafter the insignia of the Prince of Wales. The reporter also commented that "the action of the men and horses is appropriate and spirited".
