Title:
Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy
Artist: |
Baron Carlo Marochetti
This bust of Vittore Emanuele of Savoy, shows him shortly before he became King of Italy. The first version of it was sculpted between 1856 and 1858, and is now in the Armeria Reale in Turin (see entry). The Times on 13 Nov. 1858, reported that "A marble bust of the King of Sardinia, by Marochetti, has been presented to the city of Paris by the Marquis de Vilamarina, the Sardinian Ambassador, in the name of his sovereign, in acknowledgement of the hospitality His Majesty met with during his visit there". Similarly, Marochetti had earlier produced marble versions of his portraits of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert for presentation to the city of Paris, to commemorate their visit in 1855, and all three busts formed part of a series of portraits of foreign rulers, decorating the first of the "Salles des Délibérations" in the Hôtel de Ville. The historian Marius Vachon, in his account of the building's history describes how the busts of rulers were saved from destruction when the building was destroyed by the bombardment from Versailles following the Paris Commune. According to Vachon, the Communards themselves had caused the busts to be removed to the fine art stores of the city, probably because they wanted them out of the way. Ironically, it was to this measure that they owed their survival.
