This is first mentioned in an inventory of the contents of the Castello di Agliè of 1876, which refers to "a marble slab with a seahorse and child in metal". Though there is now no trace of the marble slab, this is evidently the work referred to. A recent study emphasises the variegated patina of this piece. The body of the seahorse is of a reddish hue, whereas its flippers have a greenish patina.
Anna Bovero, in her work of 1942, dated the piece around 1838, but in a more recent study (Michaela Sgherzi), 1836 is suggested as a more likely date. Both authors assume this to be a study for a fountain group.
