Carlo Felice, King of Sardinia

Baron Carlo Marochetti

Carlo Felice is shown wearing a ceremonial mantle with an elaborate collar, There are two versions of this bust at the Castello di Agliè, both in marble, but one rather larger than the other. Although Marco Calderini and others have stated that these are the work of Marochetti, Giorgio Zanchetti in his 2004 monograph on the sculptor Benedetto Cacciatori has suggested that they may in fact be by Cacciatori. His evidence for this, which does not seem strong, is their resemblance to the head and shoulders of Cacciatori's full length statue of Carlo Felice in the Abbey Church of Hautecombe in Savoy. Although Cacciatori would have been personally acquainted with Carlo Felice, it is possible that a bust by Marochetti may have been recommended to him as an example to follow in his statue.
