Marcus Cornish

1964 -

Sculptor and teacher. He is the son of the artist, Peter Cornish, and studied at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts (1982-86), Middlesex Polytechnic (1986-87) and at the Royal College of Art, where he took a course in bronze casting (1987-88) and then did his MA (1989-92). He has taught at De Montfort University (1994) and at the Royal College of Art postgraduate school (1995). In 2005 and 2006 he was artist in residence at the Museum of London, and is currently on the staff of the Prince’s School. Cornish lives and works in Lewes (Sussex), and is married to the printmaker, Mary Anne Aytoun-Ellis. Both he and his wife have accompanied the Prince of Wales on foreign tours as artists in residence. Cornish has also toured with the British army in Kosovo. He is an associate of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. Animal sculptures include the humorous Paddington Bear (2000) at Paddington Station. As a religious artist, his latest important commission has been for a 7ft bronze figure of Christ for the catholic church in Uckfield.
