Saint Vincent de Paul

Baron Carlo Marochetti

In this marble statue, Saint Vincent de Paul is shown
standing, holding a very small baby in the crook of his left arm, and looking
down at another, rather larger baby lying on its back on the ground and
stretching its arms upwards towards him. His expression is more severe and
ascetic than kindly. The folds of his cloak are simplified, giving the composition
a strong, contained look. An 1877 inventory of the holdings of the contents of the
Lyons Hospice de la Charité by D.E.L. Charvet, provides a somewhat misleading
description of the statue, and seems to have confused it with another statue in
the Hospice, in which the Saint is shown kneeling on one knee, but holding a baby on the other. It may be that the
confusion arose from both statues having been paid for from the same charitable
donation. This was made in 1834 by M. Roccofort de Vinière, and resulted
initially in a commission being given to a local sculptor, Léopold de Ruolz,
who, after commencing work on a statue of the Saint, became too ill to complete
it. Marochetti was then called in, but seems to have produced a statue to his
own design, which he completed in 1846. According to S. Lami (Dictionnaire
des sculpteurs de l'école française du XIXème siècle) Marochetti was paid
10.000 francs for the statue from this donation. A feature on the hospice in
the serial miscellany called the Albums du Crocodile (March-April 1934)
correctly identifies this statue, standing in the Jardin de la Crèche, as the
Marochetti work, though referring to it dismissively as being "in the
outmoded and insipid style of 1840".
