This group forms part of the tomb of Eliza Roy, Countess de Lariboisière (see previous object). According to a report in the Gazette de France (7 June 1857), it represents The Genius of Good Works and Consolations. This account, and others from the years immediately following its installation, informs us that the group like the figures which flank it, were once coloured, so thickly that it was virtually impossible to see that it was carved from marble. A wood engraving of the tomb in Le Monde Illustré (no.306,. vol.XII, 21 Feb. 1863) shows a small halo hovering over the head of the central figure. This was no doubt supported by a rod projecting from the back wall of the niche.
