Grenadier

This is a bronze cast of a maquette for the figure of a Grenadier which stands at one of the corners of the Monument to Carlo Alberto of Savoy in Turin. (see entries on that statue). Compositionally, it differs from the final work only in one significant detail. In this maquette, the left hand is resting on the muzzle of the rifle, whereas in the statue as finally executed it rests on the cross bar of the bayonet.
Inside the base is an incised mark, a capital E and and ampusand forming what is almost a monogram. It may be possible tentatively to suggest that this has something to do with the firm of Elkington, though this particular mark has not been seen on any other Elkington bronze.
