This relief panel represents Carlo Alberto of Savoy abdicating as King of Sardinia, after his defeat by the Austrians at Novara. The abdication was in favour of his son Vittore Emanuele, who is seen standing to the left of the table on which Carlo Alberto signs the abdication. Vittore Emanuele would later become the first King of the unified Italy.
