Description: |
The existing west front of the cathedral is much altered from how it would have appeared at the end of the 12th century. Originally there was a northwest transept to match that in the southwest. This was taken down in the 15th century, probably due to a partial collapse to which the added weight of the octagonal (14th century) top section of the tower may have contributed. Also in the 13th century the four storey Galilee porch was added, maybe to serve as a buttress to the West Tower. The drawing illustrates how the facade may have looked before these alterations. |
