Title:
Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington
Artist: |
Baron Carlo Marochetti
This is a statuette version of the statue of the Duke of Wellington, which Marochetti created for Glasgow between 1840 and 1844. Unlike the reduction which was made of Marochetti's equestrian statue of Queen Victoria in Glasgow, this statuette follows the original very closely. It is not known at precisely what date it was produced. The signature, C. Marochetti, is engraved on the upper surface of the base, close to the horse's right rear hoof. There is no founder's mark on the cast illustrated here, though at least one other cast, which has been auctioned twice at Christies in the recent decades has been stamped with the words fondu par Morel & Cie, Londres. This founder was Leonard Morel-Ladeuil, who around the time of the Great Exhibition went to work for the Birmingham firm of Elkington. It is likely that he came to London in 1848, to escape the economic consequences of the revolution of that year. So there is some likelihood that this bronze was produced after Marochetti came to England in that same year. A cast of this statuette was in Marochetti's studio sale after his death, described in the catalogue as a "Copy of the statue at Glasgow".
