Description: |
Designed by Guarino Guarini (1624-1683).His celebrated churches have vaults that are an outstanding compilation of interlaced and imbricated ribs, with a spacial illusion of interrelated volumes. His buildings had a considerable influence on the late Baroque architects of Southern Germany.
The sanctuary housed a Black Madonna, and the number of pilgrims became so great that Guarini was asked to design a new basilica. This design was never built, and in the seventeenth century a design by Amadeo Galletti was chosen but was finished and consecrated only in 1960.
