Prince Albert Wall Tablet

Baron Carlo Marochetti

The raising of this monument, following the death of the Prince Consort, was a local initiative. The committee's first choice was for a gothic memorial by the architect F. Mew, but on learning of the intention to raise a memorial to the Prince in Newport, already the site of his effigy of Princess Elizabeth, Marochetti persuaded the committee to accept a monumental tablet with a medallion bust of the Prince,"such as would be pleasing to Her Majesty, satisfactory to the subscribers, and a credit to the town", and which he guaranteed to provide for a price "not exceeding two hundred guineas". Even though at this stage the subscription amounted to less than half that sum, and Mew had already been asked to curtail his design for reasons of economic stringency, the committee decided that Mew's design "must give way to any design offered by the eminent sculptor who had furnished, by the command of her majesty, the beautiful monument to the memory of the Princess Elizabeth, and which has proved very attractive to vistors". (Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle, 5 April, 1862) Possibly Marochetti was encouraged to make his offer by a member of the committee, since we are told (Hampshire Advertiser, 5 April, 1862) that his willingness to take on the commission had been communicated to George Wyndham, a member of the committee, during an interview in London. Further subscriptions were received, following the news that Marochetti was to produce the monument . Those mentioned in the article were:£10 each from Col and Lady Harcourt, and 5gns each from the London and County Bank and the National Provincial Bank.
