Title:
Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington
Artist: |
Baron Carlo Marochetti
This bust is probably a version of the one which Marochetti created following sittings given him by the Duke of Wellington in 1841. It represents the Duke in old age, but helped prepare the sculptor for the task of showing him in the prime of life in his equestrian statue for Glasgow, inaugurated in 1844. Versions of it exist in marble and in different sizes in bronze. Bronze busts by Marochetti, which may have been identical with this model were being sold by the firm of C.F. Hancock in the winter of 1854, along with portraits of "other distinguished personages" by Marochetti.
