Hamish Black

Sculptor. Born 1948 in Braintree (Essex). As a young man he helped his father forge decorative ironwork, and it was his admiration for works in metal by Reg Butler and David Smith which encouraged him to take up sculpture. He studied at Eastbourne School of Art (1965-67), North East London Polytechnic (1967-70) and the Slade School of Art (1970-72). Since 1973 he has had extensive teaching experience, and worked with Anthony Caro from 1984. He lives and works in Sussex, and has had solo shows at Southern Grange Gardens, Lewes (1982), and at Charleston Farmhouse, Firle (1989). A large metal sculpture by Black, entitled Afloat, was erected on Brighton sea-front in 1998.
