Title:Fleischmann in his studio - Bali
Photographer:Dr Arthur Fleischmann
Copyright:Mrs Cecile Joy Fleischmann
Credit: By kind permission of Joy Fleischmann
Caption:Fleischmann in his studio - Bali. He stands surrounded by the clay and terracotta sculptures that he produced during his stay on the island. In the foreground to the right is a sculpture of Mario dancing the Kebyiar, and immediately in front of Fleischmann is 'Girl Standing Erect with Bowl on Head'. Both of these sculptures are lost. They were probably left behind when he flew to Darwin in 1939. Behind Fleischmann stands the wood carving 'Kneeling Girl' that was carved in Vienna in the early 1930s and which he carried with him to Bali and which flew with him to Darwin. It is now in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Leaning on the wall at the far left of the photograph is an image of the sculpture 'John the Baptist' that was modelled in Vienna and which was exhibited in Johannesburg while Fleischmann was staying in South Africa before he travelled on to Bali.
