Baron Carlo Marochetti
|
From a prominent Worcestershire family, John Pakington, 1st Baron Hampton (1799-1880) was Tory MP for Droitwich from 1837 to 1874. He was Secretary of State for War and the Colonies in 1852, and was twice First Lord of the Admiralty, 1852-3, and 1866-67. Marochetti's marble bust of him was presented to the Royal Hospital at Haslar (Hants) by a group of Royal Navy medical officers on 5 June 1860 (Army and Navy Gazette, 9 June 1860,p.5). The Illlustrated London News 7 July 1860,p.20), from which this engraving comes, described the bust as "alike admirable as a work of art and as a striking representation" of its subject. It was placed in the museum of the hospital, in close proximity to a bust of Viscount Melville, "who by his acts had also earned the gratitude of the Naval Medical Profession". The Illustrated London News also informs us that "a duplicate" of the bust was presented to Lady Pakington on 13 June 1860, at the family residence in Eaton Square, London.
