The subject of this bust, Henry Bickersteth, 1st Baron Langdale (1783-1851) was a physician, law-reformer and founder of the Public Record Office, responsible for bringing together state papers from the Tower of London , the chapter-house of Westminster Abbey and other places. The central block of the building expressly designed to house these records, was built to the designs of Sir James Pennethorne between 1851 and 1853 in Chancery Lane, London. A letter from the Office of Works of 5 Dec. 1855, authorizes Pennethorne "to provide at a cost not exceeding £15, a Portland stone pedestal for the marble bust of the late Lord Langdale, which you state has been presented by Lady Langdale to the General Record Repository". Following the removal of the records to the new National Archives in Kew, the bust was removed there in 1997. It is now on view in one of the reading rooms there. |
