Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy
Artist: |
Baron Carlo Marochetti
This is a small bronze version of Marochetti's statue of Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy, of which three life-size versions, one in marble and two in bronze, were erected in various locations in Bombay, the first in 1858 before the subject's death. (see entries) The full-size version was shown at the London International Exhibition of 1862. A statuette of Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy was shown at the Royal Academy in 1859, Marochetti having completed the statue for Bombay in the previous year. The initiative to raise a statue of Jeejeebhoy was set in motion following the subject's retirement in 1856, the appearance of the statuette testifying to the speed with which Marochetti had responded to the commission. Whether this is the statuette in question, we do not know. At the posthumous sale of Marochetti's studio contents (Christie, Manson and Woods, 7 May 1868) Lot 89 was a statuette of Sir Jamsetjee Jejebehoy [sic], seated in an armchair". No dimensions are given in the catalogue. Although Marochetti was operating his own foundry at this point, the castings produced there were on a monumental scale. It is possible that this small bronze was cast by Morel Ladeuil, who produced other statuettes for Marochetti.
