Tomb of Vincenzo Bellini

This drawing by Louis de Rudder records the appearance of
the stone figure of "The Angel of Music", which once formed part of
the tomb of Vincenzo Bellini in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Bellini was buried
there in April 1838, and a tomb designed by the architect Abel Blouet, with
sculpture by Marochetti, was erected in the composer's memory. This was the
same year in which Marochetti's statue of Emanuele Filiberto was exhibited in
the courtyard of the Louvre, and the Parisian press associated the two objects.
However, in 1876, Bellini's remains were removed to the place of his birth,
Catania. Describing the tomb in the periodical Le Siècle (23 April 1838,
p.3) , Louis Viardot wrote "This angel is seated, enveloped and as if
framed by his long wings....... Crowned with cypress, and with a sad and
inclined head, he clasps a lyre to his chest and with both his hands, as if it
is the last memory of a lamented friend". Although the cippus, with
its relief portrait of the composer is still to be seen in the cemetery, the
"Angel of Music" did not survive the removal operations of 1876.
