Title:
Adam Smith
Artist: |
Baron Carlo Marochetti
This bust appears to be a reduction of the marble portrait of Adam Smith by Marochetti, which John Fergus, M.P. for Fife presented to Adam Smith's birthplace Kirkcaldy in 1851 (see entry). It may be identical to one of a number of busts of celebrities ancient and modern by Marochetti, offered for sale by the jeweller and silversmith, C.F. Hancock, in adverts in the Morning Post in 1854. Marochetti lent a marble version of the bust, from his own collection, to the Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition in 1857, and a life-size plaster model of the bust was sold with his studio contents after his death in 1868.
