Title:
Sir John Bankes
Artist: |
Baron Carlo Marochetti
This bust is a conflation of Hubert Le Sueur's bust of Sir Thomas Richardson in Westminster Abbey, of which a plaster cast, commissioned by William John Bankes, still exists at Kingston Lacy, and contemporary portraits of Sir John Bankes. We may assume that it was executed as a preparation for the full-length figure of Sir John Bankes, which Marochetti went on the execute for the South Loggia of Kingston Lacy. Richardson, like Sir John Bankes, had been Lord Chief Justice, so that his style of dress and chain of office were proposed by Bankes as historical sources for Marochetti to follow.
