Description: |
Arthur Fleischmann wrote the following about this photograph in his manuscript: "The mountains of Bali are a continuation of the belt of volcanoes running through Java. In the fantasy of the Balinese, and according to the religion, they are the dwelling places of the different Mountain Gods. The pagodas in the temples are symbols of these gods and a place of their temporary lodging when they now and then come down among the people. The most important of the Mountain Gods is the Gunning Agung in the eastern part of Bali." |
