The Hungerford Suspension Bridge 1845-1863, one of London's most striking masterpieces of the Victorian era, was conceived by Isombard Kingdom Brunel. When it was built it had the longest span in Britain - a length of 206.2 metres. It was a pedestrian walkway from the South Bank of the Thames to Hungerford Market on the North Bank. Whilst Brunel was responsible for the engineering, the design of the Italianate red brick towers was the work of the city architect James Bunstone Bunning. The bridge and the market were demolished to make way for the Hungerford Railway Bridge and Charing Cross Station.
