The Leicester Chronicle of 1 Aug. 1857 reports: "A monumental tablet has been placed in the outer aisle of the Exeter Cathedral, in memory of the officers and men of the 20th or East Devon Regiment who fell in the late Crimean War. On either side of the tablet stands the figure of a soldier in the full dress uniform of the regiment, with gun in hand. These figures which are very beautifully executed, were cast by Baron Marochetti of London, from the Russian guns taken in the Crimea by the 20th Regiment." In its silhouetting of relief figures and other bronze features against a white ground, in this case the wall of the cathedral, this memorial anticipates the larger and more ambitious one in Exeter Cathedral, also by Marochetti, to the 9th Lancers who died in the Indian Mutiny, which was erected in 1860. In the case of the later memorial, bronze figures and palm trees stand out against a marble slab.
