Title:
Bust of William Makepeace Thackeray
Artist: |
Baron Carlo Marochetti
This illustration, which appeared in the Illustrated London News of 21 April, 1866, shows Marochetti's bust of Thackeray in Westminster Abbey, not long after it was unveiled in 1865. Like the plaster model, which is now in a French private collection, it is important, as it shows the bust in its original state. Around 1900, the novelist's daughter, Anne Thackeray Ritchie, with the Dean of Westminster's permission, employed the sculptor Edward Onslow Ford to carve off some of the side-whiskers on her father's neck. (for a full account of this sculpture, including the episode mentioned above, see the main entry on it)
