Tomb of Napoleon - 2nd Project
|
Artist: |
Baron Carlo Marochetti
|
This is one
of a series of what appear to be near contemporary drawings of Marochetti's
second project for the tomb of Napoleon, tried out in the Dôme des Invalides in
August 1840. In this project, the equestrian statue of Napoleon, in Imperial
robes, was mounted on a solid plinth, unlike the open tabernacle structure of
the first project. Perched on the lower stage of the pedestal were allegorical
pensive figures of old men, contemplating emblems of Empire. These seem to be
inspired by the allegorical figures designed by Giorgio Vasari to surround the
sarcophagus on the tomb of Michelangelo, in Santacroce, Florence. A far from
flattering view of the second project is provided in a lithographic
illustration which appeared in L'Artiste (2nd series, 1840, vol.vi,
no.17, p.263).
