Title:
Angel of Sorrows
Artist: |
Baron Carlo Marochetti
This grieving angel guards over the Marochetti family tomb. It is not known for certain for what purpose it was originally created, as it was originally put in its present position towards the end of the 19th century, when the monuments which were in the vicinity of the local parish church were moved to the cemetery. Caroline Hedengren-Dillon believes that it may have been intended to commemorate Carlo Marochetti's daughter Giovanna, who died at an early age in 1852. (see C. Hedengren-Dillon, 'Marochetti's Angels: wings of inspiration', in Sculpting Art History: Essays in Memory of Benedict Read, (ed. K.Eustace, M.Stocker and J. Barnes) London, 2018, pp.79-80) |
