Vase with Mythological Subjects
Artist: |
Baron Carlo Marochetti
This engraving from the Art Journal's illustrated catalogue of the Great Exhibition of 1851, shows the vase with mythological figures which Marochetti designed for Minton. The side of the vase shown in this illustration has a relief of 'Neptune and Amphitrite'. The other side of this vase is shown in an old photograph in the Minton Archive. (see entry) That side shows 'Boreas Restrained by the Sirens'. This vase is typical of the slightly ponderous renaissance-revival designs Marochetti provided to the firm, for interpretation in terracotta, Parian Ware or in the Majolica Ware, which was introduced by the firm's French artistic director, Leon Arnoux. The mythological subjects on this vase are described in an artricle on ceramic exhibits at the Great Exhibition in the Staffordshire Advertiser (7 June 1851,p.7).
