Baron Carlo Marochetti

This bust, which is signed and dated 1850, is probably the portrait of Lady Constance Gower, exhibited by Marochetti at the Royal Academy in 1851. It is said to have come from Eaton Hall in Cheshire.
The bust was presumably commissioned by Lady Constance's parents, the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland, and represents their daughter at the age of 16, shortly before her marriage to her first cousin, Earl Grosvenor, which took place on 28 April 1852. Reporting the marriage, which took place in the Chapel Royal in St James's Palace, and was attended by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, the Morning Post of the following day reported that at the reception, Marochetti's bust of the bride was displayed, garlanded with stephanotis. In 1869, Grosvenor became 3rd Marquess of Westminster, and then in 1874 his title became Duke of Westminster, so his wife became first Marchioness and then Duchess of Westminster. She predeceased her husband, dying in 1882.
The bust must originally have been at one of the Sutherlands' several palatial homes and then moved to Eaton Hall on Constance's marriage. It is not known precisely when it left Eaton Hall. It was presented for sale at Amersham Auction Rooms in 2010, rather vaguely described as "a female member of the Grosvenor family".
