Lord John George de la Poer Beresford (1773-1862) was born in Dublin, the second surviving son of the 1st Marquess of Waterford. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church. After occupying two incumbencies, he became Dean of Clogher in 1799. Bishop successively of Cork and Ross, and then of Dublin, he became Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland in 1822. Having been Vice Chancellor since 1829, he became Chancellor of the University of Dublin in 1851. He employed the architect Louis Nockalls Cottingham to restore St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh.
In 1864, the Dean and Chapter of Armagh Cathedral resolved that the "monument to the late Primate by Baron Marochetti" be "erected under the third arch from the West door, on the South aisle of the nave" (Dean and Chapter Board Book Minutes, 1865, p.205 - cited by James Stevens Curl in "Funerary Monuments and memorials in St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh", 2013). One late 19th century guide to the cathedral records that the memorial was erected by Beresford's family, and states that Marochetti had "preserved the likeness of the face with great skill" (E. Rogers, "Memoir of The Armagh Cathedral with an account of the ancient city", pubd Belfast, 1881?)
This is a typical Victorian episcopal effigy, whose symmetry and hands joined in prayer conform to the precepts of the Camdenian movement, though a degree of realism has been brought to the treatment of the face, the surplice, and especially to the lawn sleeves. It was one of four effigies produced by Marochetti for the Beresford family during the 1860s. One in bronze commemorates Henry, 3rd Marquess of Waterford (d.1859). Another in marble commemorates John, 4th Marquess (d.1866). The fourth is a half-length version in marble of the Primate's effigy in Armagh, as described in this entry. All except the tomb of the Primate are in Clonegam church, near the family seat at Curraghmore.
