This marble bust of the twelve year old Prince, Vittore Emanuele, later to become the first king of a united Italy, was executed between 1831 and 1834. It is one of a pair, the companion bust being Vittore Emanuele's eight year old brother Ferdinando,Duke of Genoa. Both show their subjects in military uniform. Presumably commissioned by the boys' father, Carlo Alberto, they are first mentioned in a catalogue of the Royal Collection in 1855, when they were in the Castello Reale d'Aglie. Both were later removed to the Castello di Racconigi.
