Tomb of Vincenzo Bellini

This tomb of the Italian composer, Vincenzo Bellini, was
erected in the 11th division of the Cemetery of Père Lachaise in Paris, in
April 1838 ( Le Siècle, 23 April 1838, p.3, "Monument de
Bellini", by Louis Viardot). Marochetti collaborated on it with his
friend, the architect, Abel Blouet. Originally it consisted of the cippus,
which is still seen there today, with its roundel relief portrait of Bellini,
and the names of his operas inscribed on it, and in front of this, seated on
the grave slab, a figure of the "Angel of Music", freestanding in
stone. This seated angel, its inclined head crowned with cypress, clasped a lyre to
its breast. In 1876, Bellini's remains were taken for reinterment in his
birthplace, Catania, in Sicily. It is likely that the angel was damaged in this
process. It is no longer present on the tomb today. There is however a record
of the figure. This is a red chalk drawing executed by Louis de Rudder in
preparation for a lithograph, which is now in a private collection. This
drawing appears to give an accurate impression of the figure. (see seprate
entry)
