Girl Bathing in Ditch
|
Artist: |
Dr Arthur Fleischmann
|
Description: |
Arthur Fleischmann wrote in his manuscript: "The brook in front of the house is employed for the daily bathing ritual as well as for doing the laundry." "The streams and canals are not only used for bathing. This girl, who at first felt rather embarrassed at being photographed, was busy at the canal on the road-side first cutting and peeling a freshly-picked pawpaw and then washing the pieces in the extremely dirty water which is used for all purposes whilst flowing through the village. And still they have a high idea of cleanliness. They are immunised against many illnesses the mortality of the children is lower than on the surrounding islands." |
