Ju Ming

1938 -

Sculptor. Born in Taiwan, he trained as a woodcarver under Lee Chin-Chuan, and then applied his knowledge to a wide variety of media. He opened his own studio and crafts business in Tungsiao in 1959, winning several prizes in the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition. Then, wishing to develop further, he re-apprenticed himself to Yang Yu-Yu. In 1976, following Yang’s advice, Ju took up Tai Chi, and in the same year exhibited his Tai Chi sculptures at the National Museum of History in Taipei. The impression these created led to his being acclaimed as one of Ten Outstanding Youths of 1976. From 1980, Ju Ming began to acquire an international reputation. More recently he has worked on his “Living World” series, sculptures in bronze, stainless steel, painted wood and foam rubber, depicting figures from modern, westernised society. Ju Ming has built a museum to showcase his own work, just outside Taipei.
