John Aiken

Sculptor. He studied at Chelsea School of Art (1968-73) and at the British School in Rome (1973-75). In 1986 he was appointed head of sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, and in 2000 became Slade Professor and director of the school. His work is stongly influenced by his enthusiasm for military architecture and archaeology. Commissions include a 40 metre frieze for Belfast City Hospital (1986), The City as Shape for Orchard Street, Derry, a 100 metre long series of modular granite sculptures for Temple Quay, Bristol (2004), and Monolith and Shadow for the new University College Hospital in London.
